THE ADVANTAGES OF ROTARY VANE COMPRESSOR TECHNOLOGY FOR RAIL APPLICATIONS

Written by Ing. Enea Mattei S.p.A. | 1 September 2022

The railway sector requires high quality performance standards and high-quality compressed air, delivered continuously in extreme environmental situations, due to weather conditions and the vibrations to which rail vehicles are subjected.

Mattei’s rotary vane compressors offer undisputed advantages in pneumatic applications aboard rail vehicles.

The key to the high performance seen in Mattei compressors is in the unique deployment of rotary vane technology. The vane compressor consists of a rotor that rotates offset within a cylindrical stator. The rotor has longitudinal grooves, and within each groove runs one or more vanes. The compressor is directly connected to the motor by means of a flexible coupling. These grooves create highly efficient compression pockets.

Rotary vane technology, developed by Mattei, offers many advantages:

1. a compact, integrated design that allows installation in extremely small spaces;

2. minimal maintenance, as there are no wearable materials such as thrust bearings that force screw systems to be frequently overhauled and replaced;

3. longer life and higher performance for the same power, as Mattei compressors are not affected by temperatures, external environmental situations, and no vibrations since they are self-balancing as they rotate on just two bushes and, connect the motor directly to the compressor via a flexible coupling. Mattei’s industrial compressors have a recorded service life of more than 200,000 hours without the need for an airend overhaul. In the rail sector, it is common to have more than 35,000 hours of operation, while the average lifetime of a screw compressor airend is 12,000 hours;

4. 15 % greater energy savings than rotary compressors of the same capacity, thanks to optimized design and low rotational speed;

In summary, vane compressors perform better and have the lowest life cycle cost of any compressor.

Mattei successfully attained the IRIS certification and offers an excellent after-sales service that is present in more than 40 countries worldwide.
To ensure performance, durability and extend operating life with a constant level of performance, reliability, and safety, Mattei has designed customized service kits for each compressor with lubricants, filters, separators, and consumable materials.
