Mattei: a century of history

1919

Founding

In a small workshop in Via Padova in Milan, the engineer Enea Mattei starts an independent business in his name. In the early days he was involved in machining remnants of wartime material purchased from the state, but soon, to meet the growing demand of the industrial market, he started designing and manufacturing air compressors.

1934

First diesel compressor

Mattei builds his first compressor, a piston machine powered by a diesel engine, a product that achieves success both in Italy and abroad with the first exports. In the following years the company enjoys exponential growth that continues even after Mattei's death in 1955.

1958

First vane compressor

Sandra Mattei, Enea's wife, takes the company's reins and carries on her husband's work. In 1958, Mattei introduces the innovative rotary vane technology, anticipating the market's need for smaller, lighter compressors.

1960

Investments

Mattei becomes a joint-stock company, further expanding its market in Italy and abroad.

1962

Acquisition by OMIC

The Contaldi family, owner of OMIC - Officine Meccaniche ing. Contaldi, acquires Ing. Enea Mattei Spa.
Giulio Contaldi takes on the role of Chief Executive Officer and, after a few years, moves the headquarters to the new plant in Vimodrone.

1981

Expansion

The modern production site in Verdello-Zingonia (BG) is inaugurated.

1980
1990

International expansion

A decade of dynamic growth: Mattei Compressors Inc. opens in the United States, Mattei Compresseurs Sarl opens in France, and Mattei Compressors Ltd. opens in Great Britain.

1994

ISO 9001 certification

Always attentive to the quality and efficiency of its production processes, Mattei earns ISO 9001 certification.

2000

Further international expansion

Mattei Kompressoren Deutschland GmbH is founded, followed by new representative offices in Russia, Spain and Singapore.

2007

Presence in China

It's the year of China: Mattei (SuZhou) Air Compressors Manufacturing Co., Ltd is inaugurated in the Chinese province of Jiangsu, opening the doors of South-East Asian markets to the company.

2012

Birth of Mattei Transit Engineering

From the acquisition of the American company Transit Engineering Services (TES) emerges Mattei Transit Engineering (MTE), specialising in the assembly of air compressors for subways, light rail and public transport.

2015

Purchase of Winton Engineering

Mattei acquires the English company Winton Engineering Ltd, specialised in solutions for transforming the energy produced by vehicles' engines into "energy on board" to power other equipment.

2019

One hundred years of Mattei

Mattei celebrates its 100th anniversary and receives the prestigious Le Fonti Innovation Award, an important recognition for its commitment to energy saving. Today Mattei is an international group with over 250 employees, committed to the study of eco-friendly technology that will help to make the production processes of its customers more sustainable thanks to the use of increasingly efficient compressors.
