Since the late 1980s, Transwest has provided a diverse range of transportation products and services to commercial and retail customers. Headquartered in Colorado, Transwest serves countless industries and markets across the United States and Canada, and offers sales and services for heavy- and medium-duty trucks and trailers, cars, SUVs, RVs and much more.
In 2014, Transwest built a new, larger facility in order to consolidate and centralize the four smaller locations the company had used previously. The new facility required systems that could operate at higher than average operating pressures, like piston-type compressors. However, Transwest also wanted a system that was inherently quiet, efficient, and capable of handling continuous-duty operations.
MATTEI’S SOLUTION
John Baker Sales, a Mattei distributor located in Colorado, worked very closely with Transwest to ascertain the company’s needs prior to making a product recommendation. John Baker Sales conducted extensive research using advanced testing equipment in order to accurately and precisely gauge the amount of compressed air Transwest was using at their old facilities. Measuring the company’s compressed air and energy consumption was essential in order to identify the appropriate Mattei product with the ability to meet Transwest’s compressed air needs at their new facility.
Equipped with John Baker Sales’ recommendation, Transwest purchased:
2 – OPTIMA Series 30 hp
2 – OPTIMA Series 60 hp
2 – Dryers
2 – Storage Tanks
THE OPTIMA SERIES: Through the use of Mattei’s innovative rotary vane technology, the OPTIMA Series offers high-efficiency performance and quiet operation, as compared to typical rotary screw and piston compressors. The low rotational speed of the compressor, the high volumetric efficiency and the absence of roller or thrust bearings, results in energy savings of more than 15% as compared to other compressor systems.
In particular, Transwest was impressed with the OPTIMA’s no-bearing air-ends. In screw compressors, repair costs are typically associated with the bearings. Due to the inevitable wear of the bearings, a screw’s rotors eventually touch the cylinders in which they rotate. When this occurs, the air-end requires replacement—and the failure of the air-end can cost up to 40% of the cost of a brand new unit.
The OPTIMA Series’ lack of bearings eliminates heavy wear and tear to the air-end that is common in screw units. Much like the connecting rods of an engines’ crankshaft, the heart of the Mattei rotor stator unit (RSU) is the rotor, which is supported by two metal Babbitt bushings that routinely deliver more than 100,000 hours of life. In comparison, screw-type compressors use up to six radial and thrust bearings, engineered for only 50,000 hours (ASME B-10) of life.
DRYERS
While clean, dry compressed air is important in every efficient and profitable manufacturing and process operation, it is absolutely vital to body shops, collision repair centers and other paint-related applications. This is because air in the range of 2 – 3% relative humidity is required to use waterborne paints, which is why dryers were particularly critical to Transwest’s operations. Through the use of Mattei’s high-performance, energysaving, compressed air purification products, Transwest is able to provide clean and dry compressed air reliably and at an affordable price.
STORAGE TANKS
Air storage allows the system pressure to remain more stable over time, handle intermittent peak air demands, and lower the overall energy consumption of the facility.
THE OUTCOME
Transwest’s new facility required air compressors that were quiet, efficient and able to handle continuous-duty operations—and Mattei had the solution that addressed all of their needs. All Mattei’s compressors are direct drive in line and therefore, have a 1:1 ratio between the electric motor speed and that of the air-end, which means unmatched energy efficiency and unrivaled performance. Utilizing Mattei’s variable speed OPTIMA Series means lower operating costs and greater savings for Transwest. Additionally, the reliability of Mattei’s OPTIMA Series provides Transwest with the long-term clean, dry air that is critical to successful operation of the collision repair facility.
Mattei offers a wide range of vane compressor models that perfectly meet the specific needs of the transport industry.
The reliability of Mattei compressors, the high quality standards of the delivered compressed air and the compliance with the industry regulations, make them ideal to be used in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry.
Reduced operating costs, environmental sustainability and extreme purity of the air supplied make Mattei compressors suitable for all processes in the food industry.
