OPERATION ENERGY EFFICIENCY

At ComVac, Mattei will showcase the Mattei Xpander, a waste heat recovery system, in collaboration with the British company, TP Group.

Vimodrone, April 2017 – Mattei will exhibit at ComVac 2017 with many new products and one clear objective: To spread the culture of energy conservation, an area in which its industrial compressors perform exceptionally well.

In recent years we have focused our efforts on developing machines with efficiency levels that go beyond what was previously available”, explains Silvia Barone, Marketing Manager for Mattei. It’s more than just a company philosophy, it is a commitment to our clients: To offer solutions that, on the one hand, allow clients to respect the environment and relevant regulations; whilst on the other hand, bringing down their business costs. In Hannover we will present the results of our work: conceptual products shown at the last ComVac, now ready for mass-market launch. In addition to developing innovative and efficient technologies, we haven’t forgotten another important aspect for our clients: reliability. And for that reason we have also decided to offer all our customers, the MyCare extended warranties of 5 and 10 years as standard, because we are so confident of the quality of our products.”

New Releases for ComVac 2017

The main focus on the Mattei stand will be for the Maxima Xtreme 75kW compressor. “With Maxima Xtreme Mattei really have outdone themselves”, commented Stefano Murgia, Head of Research & Development at Mattei. “Thanks to fluid dynamic optimisation, and the new oil-injection system, Maxima Xtreme offers improvements in energy efficiency that are 20% higher than industry averages. The technological advantages of Maxima Xtreme will be progressively rolled out to all our models in other ranges, to guarantee energy savings to all the industrial sectors in which we operate.”
Another important technical development, on some compressor ranges, will be the launch of permanent magnet motors. The new motors are characterised by excellent power-to-weight ratios and reliability; as well as maximising the achievable energy savings in line with the supply of compressed air required. In Hannover this technology will be demonstrated with the 110kW variable speed compressor, Optima 110 and the new Blade 11 i SE with direct coupling, part of the ranges dedicated to the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises.
Staying with the Blade family, in the 7-11kW series, Mattei reveals a 1:1 direct coupling, after the incredible success of the Blade 7-11 belt transmission series already available on the market. Murgia affirmed “Mattei strongly believes in direct coupling, which guarantees high operating efficiencies, reliability and reduces maintenance needs. We are therefore adding this feature to a highly-popular model such as Blade 11, along with a revamped design, to house this innovative solution that simplifies the maintenance requirements and optimises energy consumption.”

Mattei Xpander and the TP Group collaboration

XpanderThe Mattei Xpander 3kW will be presented at ComVac, a patented system able to recover energy from the hot oil of the compressor lubrication circuit. Around 90% of the electrical energy used by a compressor, is lost to the atmosphere in the form of heat at a low temperature, especially through the lubricant oil cooling process. To take advantage of these energy sources at low temperatures the most widespread solution is the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) which permits the generation of electrical energy “in isolation” or that can be passed into the power circuits. Mattei Xpander is a type of ORC-based energy recovery system.

When developing the Xpander, Mattei also called upon the services of the British engineering company TP Group, specialists in advanced solutions regarding energy and critical operational processes, for the aerospace and defense industries. “The strength of the collaboration with Mattei rests in the common belief that these new technologies can provide clean energy at affordable prices”, explained Simon Branch, Head of Business Development – Energy&Process.“Transforming wasted energy into a reusable asset is an ongoing challenge that you can win with innovative and reputable projects such as Mattei Xpander.

We collaborated with qualified partners from the outset of the design phase for Mattei Xpander, which also saw the involvement of some Italian universities. The engineering of the system was entrusted to TPG after a meeting in 2015 at a compressed air technology conference. What convinced us to choose TPG was their expertise and technical experience within control systems and the transport of gases.TPG already had the technical solutions that allowed the Mattei Xpander to be brought to market rapidly.” confirmed Murgia.

The foundations for success of this ORC system are on the one hand, the potential of Mattei’s rotary vane technology, with its great qualities of reliability and energy efficiency; whilst on the other there is the profound knowledge of TPG in the planning and design of these systems honed over years of experience.” continued Branch.

From the technological point-of-view TPG took care of the optimisation of the thermal systems: “Thanks to TPG contributions we were able to obtain a 20% improvement in terms of electrical output from the ORC system. Mattei Xpander is now an industry first; we are proud to be first-to-market,” concludes Murgia. “At ComVac we will present this very interesting solution for the energy optimisation of compressed air systems. Mattei Xpander has above all , a very wide range of applications, in that it can work with any system equipped with an adequate heat source.”
